As promised here is the first plein air painting I did in Estes Park. The first in oil that I've done in a while. It was a wonderful afternoon by the lake. I've definitely got to get out more! I had several visitors come by. Including two buck elks who waded thru the water, (below right). I'm assuming they were taking the short cut to their suite at the Stanley. Also stopping by, was wayfaring photographer Jessica Kraft. That's her in the video below taking some pix of the painting. She's a sweet soul. Check out her work: http://www.jessicakraft.com

I took a little painting trip up to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park over the past couple of days. It's the first time in a while that I've painted en plain air in oils. Thought I'd start small, 5x7, and work my way up! Fresh off the easel this afternoon. Mountain Meadows, available for $100. I have one other which I will post later...
Garden Trees 6x6" Acrylic on Canvasboard
I'm feeling a strong need to disconnect from the news and turn my attention to nature, which is my healing refuge from the makings of human beings who seem to have forgotten their humanity. Besides fall is my favorite time of year! So for the foreseeable future, I plan to spend much more time 'forest bathing' as the Japanese call it. Snuggling in the embrace of Mother Nature. We don't need to travel miles to find peace, we can visit little pockets of sanity even in the city, be they parks, meadows, streams or even galleries! The landscape above, is close to home, a natural buffer with a walking trail near the Highline Canal. It is believed that even looking out the window at a tree, or a picture of a tree, has positive, beneficial effects on our well being.* * This painting and the statement above have not been evaluated by the FDA :-) Namaste Winter is an etching,
Spring a watercolor, Summer an oil painting, and Autumn a mosaic of them all. -- Stanley Horowitz (From the New York Public Library: "Every November, the searches for Stanley Horowitz on Google gain momentum. Horowitz, a poet, published a tranquil 18 word poem in the November 1983 issue of Reader's Digest magazine, page 109. Some years later the poem was posted to a list of autumn quotations on the Internet, sandwiched between poetry giants like John Keats and Robert Frost, and it has been used ubiquitously all over the web ever since. As one of my regular patrons, Horowitz was interested to know how many websites his poem is quoted on. A search of his name and the first line of the poem retrieved around 1,630,000 results." ...And now, one million, six hundred thirty thousand and one.) These two paintings were inspired by all things orange. Particularly the sudden appearance this week of wonderful orange butterflies everywhere. Mariposa is Spanish for butterfly. I even saw a few of them near timberline yesterday when I went up to Mt Evans to see the changing leaves. Even the tundra up there at a distance looks like an orange velvet covering the hills. And yes, of course the Denver Broncos wore orange when they whipped up on the Cowboys last weekend! Every artist dips their brush in their own soul,
and paints their own nature into their pictures. -- Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887) paraphrased My latest little abstract Black & Blue, 6x6", acrylic and pencil on Ampersand Gessoboard. Its the first time I've painted on the Ampersand boards and I really like the surface. Its a little smoother than I'm used to, but not slick at all. Had a nice feel when moving the paint across the surface. Yay!
I took this photo peeking out from under an overhang. The sun was overexposed, but in the eye of the refraction you can see the beginning of the eclipse!
A friend of mine from Fort Collins sent me this photo. During the eclipse, these were the shadows cast by leaves on a chair in his backyard. So instead of Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon, how about a little Cat Stevens' Moon Shadow: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hr0rDW5j1KU
